Barnes is situated in the picturesque southwest corner of Bayfield County, located in northwest Wisconsin. Encompassing a vast area of 124.2 square miles (79,488 acres), it is renowned for its abundant lakes and forests. The year-round population of Barnes consists of 823 residents, as per the 2020 Census. However, during the summer months, the population swells to approximately 3,294 due to 80% of housing being seasonal.
Barnes Emergency Services receives an average of 90 to 100 calls annually, with 75% to 85% of these calls are for EMS. The Barnes Emergency Services Building is staffed by two full-time EMS personnel during weekdays and one full-time EMS personnel during weeknights. Additionally, a dedicated team of volunteers, comprising nine active EMS personnel and nine active firefighters, promptly respond to calls from their homes or daily activities.

The mission of the Barnes Emergency Services is to provide the Town of Barnes area residents and visitors with the highest possible level of protection against loss of life and/or property. This is achieved by maintaining a well trained and equipped crew of Fire/Medical response personnel, backed up by a support staff of inspectors, educators, maintenance personnel and supervisors, all within the scope and limitations of the budgetary resources provided.
